Shrine of Job
Tomb of Job
Tomb of Job 2
The tomb of Job is located on the hills overlooking the coastal city of Salalah in the Dhofar region of eastern Oman. The building containing the tomb is surrounded by gardens, and the tomb itself is roughly 6 meters long. Visitors regularly offer incense and other gifts out of respect for the prophet.
According to Islamic sources, the story of Job is found in Q 21:73-74 and 38:41-44. Job is said to be a descendent of Abraham (see Q 6:4 where he is listed along with David, Solomon, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron). Muslim exegetes hold that Job was an Israelite living among the Romans. Q 38:42-44 mentions that Job’s affliction was relieved with cold water and many shrines ascribed to Job contain water sources and wells. Tombs of Job are plentiful and can be found in Iraq, Syria, India, and Central Asia.
